(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1073\/pnas.1916903117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020, PNAS<\/a>) &#8211; <strong>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1073\/pnas.1916903117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Active learning narrows achievement gaps for underrepresented students in undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and math<\/a>&#8220;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Freeman et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-misc.lifesci.ucla.edu\/demo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2022\/02\/2P.1-Freeman-et-al-2014_Active-learning-increases-student-performance-in-STEM.pdf\">(2014, PNAS)<\/a>\u00a0performed a <strong>meta-analysis of 225 studies to find active learning associated with increased learning and decreased failure<\/strong> across the sciences.<\/p>\n<p>Haak et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/wp-misc.lifesci.ucla.edu\/demo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2022\/02\/2nd-2P.2-Haak-et-al-2011_Active-learning-reduces-achievement-gap-in-intro-biology.pdf\"> (2011, Science)<\/a> found that a <strong>\u201chigh-structured\u201d active learning class<\/strong> (i.e. one with multiple weekly assignments and regular student engagement) <strong>decreased achievement gaps<\/strong> between \u201cadvantaged\u201d and \u201cdisadvantaged\u201d groups.<\/p>\n<p>Ballen, Wieman et al. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5749958\/\">2017,\u00a0<em>CBE-Life Sciences<\/em><\/a>) found that active learning closed the achievement gap between underrepresented groups and non-underrepresented groups, mainly by increasing the self-efficacy of both groups of students.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div id=\"accordion-4160359866\"
